As I sit down to write this article, I’m filled with a mix of emotions – sadness that my internship at MyPR has come to an end, but also happiness and gratitude for the incredible experience I had.

I still remember the day I was handpicked by Alan Straton, the founder of MyPR, at a matchmaking event at my school. Little did I know that this would be the start of an amazing journey that would equip me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue a career in Public Relations.

One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to work on a product review for FORD. It was an exciting experience, and I was thrilled to see our work published online. I also had the chance to visit the Nyosi Reserve, where I was able to explore the beautiful surroundings and learn more about the local wildlife.

I’ll also never forget the experience of starting our own PR agency, DLB PR, with my fellow interns Londeka Ngcongo and Baphiwe Yoyo. Alan’s guidance and support were instrumental in helping us get started.

As I move forward in my career, I know that I’ll carry the lessons I learned at MyPR with me always. I’ll miss the laughter, the jokes, and the sense of belonging that came with being part of the MyPR “family”. But I’m also excited for the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. But let’s talk about my boss.

Throughout my internship, Alan was more than just a mentor, he was a guide, and a constant source of encouragement. His “Dad jokes” became a daily staple, and I must admit that I’ll miss them dearly. But what I’ll miss even more is his sharp wit and sarcasm, it was always entertaining to see him in action. His patience and kindness were inspiring, and he never made us feel like we were bothering him, even when we were struggling to learn something new.

One of the things that I admire most about him is his passion for whatever he does. But what I admire even more is the way he talks about his friends and colleagues in the industry. He always has something positive to say about them, and he never fails to acknowledge their hard work and achievements.

I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Alan talk about his friends, including Mike Pantsi, a tour guide who has made a lasting impression on him. Although I only met Mike briefly at the NMBTA event, I had already heard so much about him from Mr Alan. Similarly, I had heard him rave about Michelle Brown from Browns PR long before I met her, and it was clear that he has a deep respect for her work. I think that’s one of the things I truly admire about him, that he gives people their flowers, even when they’re not in the room. It makes me feel proud to have him as a reference

As a mentor, Alan was exceptional. He taught us the ins and outs of PR, writing press releases, Interviewing people for stories, writing articles from the heart, website design, writing proposals, programming, managing social media campaigns, I can go on all day. But he also shared his wisdom on life, offering advice on everything. His guidance was invaluable, and I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him.

As I move forward in my career, I know that I’ll carry the lessons I learned at MyPR with me always. I’ll miss the laughter, the jokes, and the sense of belonging that came with being part of the MyPR “family”. But I’m also excited for the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

So, thank you Alan for an amazing internship experience. I’ll never forget what I learned from you, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to work with you. You’re not only a great mentor, but also a kind and caring person who genuinely wants to see his interns succeed.

In fact, I would recommend MyPR to anyone looking for a meaningful and educational internship experience. Alan’s passion for his work is contagious, and he will inspire and motivate you to learn and grow.
