Khomani Desert San - Northern Cape, South Africa

The San are the aboriginal people of South Africa. Their distinct hunter-gatherer culture stretches back over 20 000 years, and their genetic origins reach back over one million years. Recent research indicates that the San are the oldest genetic stock of contemporary humanity.

Oom John Kruiper’s speech and farewell dance

A selected Khomani San video:

The Kalahari Desert Festival is the convergence of dance, music, culture, and history beneath the Kalahari’s towering red dunes. It is flagship festival hosted by South Africa’s very own ‡Khomani San and it celebrates the rich diversity of indigenous groups through the arts. The ‡Khomani will act as your guides as they share their homeland and communities with the world. It is a spectacular opportunity to reconnect historically and geographically diverse cultures with a common past in a unique and spiritually rejuvenating environment. The Kalahari Desert Festival is held during Human Rights month and will bring South African communities together through the dramatic expression of the arts — those things which unite and inspire each one of us.
