History of Black Friday

Black Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving in the United States and is considered the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Here’s a brief overview of its history:

In the early 1900s, the term “Black Friday” was initially used by police in Philadelphia to describe the heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic that occurred the day after Thanksgiving. They dreaded this day because it often led to chaos and increased crime.

During the 1960s retailers began to rebrand the term to reflect a more positive connotation. They explained that the day marked the point when stores began to turn a profit, moving from “in the red” (losses) to “in the black” (profits).

In the 1970s the term “Black Friday” gained popularity across the nation as retailers adopted it to promote their sales. Stores began to offer significant discounts to attract shoppers.

The 1980s saw the shopping event became synonymous with major sales and promotions, and it started to receive extensive media coverage. This led to an increase in consumer participation.

Increasing competition in the 1990s saw retailers began to open earlier, with some stores starting their sales on Thanksgiving evening. This trend continued to grow, leading to the phenomenon of “Black Thursday.”

At the beginning of this century the rise of online shopping changed the dynamics of Black Friday. Retailers started offering online deals, giving consumers the option to shop from home.

The emergence of “Cyber Monday,” the Monday following Thanksgiving, further shifted shopping trends. Many consumers began to prefer online shopping, leading to increased sales during this period.

Black Friday remains one of the biggest shopping days in the United States, with both in-store and online sales. Retailers often start promotions well in advance, leading to a broader “shopping season.”

The internet was the impetus for Black Friday to become a world wide phenomenon helped in no small way by lots of media coverage and many social media posts of people fighting for bargains, streaming into stores and posting their bargain finds.

Directory listings can provide numerous benefits for your business.

Some of the key benefits from Directory Listings are:

Increased visibility: If you list your directory on different online directories, more people will be able to discover it. This can bring more visitors to your website and attract more businesses to join your directory.

Improved search engine optimization (SEO): Listing your directory in reputable online directories can also help improve your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts. This is because search engines consider the number of backlinks to your website when determining its authority and ranking.

Cost-effective marketing: The art of listing your business in online directories is an exquisite and enchanting way to allure an influx of traffic toward your website. This marvelous technique can be advantageous for your directory enterprise, as it has the potential to augment the number of businesses listed in your directory and generate a prodigious amount of revenue.

Credibility and trust: Being listed in authoritative online directories can also help establish credibility and trust in your directory business. This is because online directories are often seen as trusted sources of information by both consumers and businesses.

One-way links: Search engines place a premium on one-way links rather than reciprocal links, and directories are a great way to obtain those valuable one-way links. Search engines also place great value on links from sites that are well-established and are relevant to your market niche. Since directories allow you to place your listing in the categories that most closely fit with your product or service, you can rest assured that search engines will consider these links relevant. And you have the option of choosing older, more well-established directories that will show search engines that your links come from authoritative websites.

Search engine listings: Once you submit your site to a directory and your site is listed, it will only be a matter of days before the major search engines begin listing your URL as well. Robots are constantly searching for new websites and will find your website fast if it is listed in a directory.

Keyword relevance: Having your site listed in a web directory can help build keyword relevance, which in turn results in more traffic to your website.

Brand awareness: Directory submissions are essential for increasing brand awareness.

Affordability: Directory submission is one of the most affordable SEO strategies you can find. Many directories will list your site for free, and even those sites that charge to list your site don’t charge a prohibitive amount. Directory submission is easily one of the most economically reasonable ways to address link popularity, brand awareness, and keyword targeting for your website.

One of the drawbacks to directory submission is that is a tedious process. SEO experts and internet marketing professionals have discovered that manual submission to directories is the best way to complete the directory submission task since each directory has its own rules and regulations for submission. Using submission software runs a great risk of rejection since such software is unable to customize your listing for each directory and can’t choose appropriate categories and subcategories as accurately as a human can. Manual submission can take a lot of time and effort but are certainly worth it.
