Algoa FM Opens Garden Route Studio

Algoa FM will be getting even closer and more personal with listeners and businesses in the Garden Route following the opening of its purpose-built studio on Courtenay Street in George.

“The drive show on weekdays between 3 and 7pm, hosted by Simon Bechus, has been aired from Algoa FM’s headquarters in Nelson Mandela Bay while the project to establish the studio was in action over the past year.

“We are excited that Simon, who has been living in George for the past five years, can now broadcast The Drive Show to the Garden Route from our George studio” says Algoa FM programme manager Mio Khondleka.

“Simon’s experience of interviewing international celebrities such as Elton John and Ronan Keating will give the Garden Route Drive Show a unique flavour as he’ll be chatting to the people who make the region so special,” says Khondleka.

“It has been a great opportunity for me to become part of the multi-talented team, and I will be bringing the unique Algoa FM vibe and professionalism to the Garden Route now that I’m back in George full time,” says Bechus.

“As one of my clients put it, ‘best wishes for a rising Phoenix.’ It couldn’t be more accurate,” says Algoa FM Garden Route Sales Account Executive Angelique Strydom.

“Algoa FM has long been a member of this community, and the opening of a studio in George demonstrates strength, passion, and commitment to the people of the Garden Route.

“The Drive Show with Simon Bechus offers local businesses and the community a focused opportunity to grow their business with local consumers by advertising to a niche market.

“This show drives local content, local news updates and local business,” she says.

“The listeners and I will be exploring what the Garden Route has to offer and meeting the almost mythical characters who we hear so much about, but do not often get a chance to talk to,” adds Bechus.

“As a business which has literally put its money where its mouth is by investing substantially in the Garden Route, we will continue to partner with local businesses to help the region to grow economically,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.

“Since obtaining our licence to broadcast to the Garden Route 12 years ago, we’ve entertained and informed visitors and locals alike, and in doing so, literally fallen in love with the area.

“Simon will be taking this love of the Garden Route to a whole new level, while playing the music our adult contemporary audience loves so much,” he adds.

Simon will also continue to host his Saturday afternoon show between 3 and 7pm across the full footprint from our new home in George.

Listeners will be able to connect with Simon on-air via Telegram, on social media via his show Facebook page, The Drive with Simon Bechus on Algoa FM, and online.

His interviews will be available as podcasts through the Algoa FM website and will be repeated for listeners outside of the Garden Route Drive transmission.

Could the Prestigious Lipton Cup Challenge come to Algoa Bay Once More?

We speculate this as we bring you Algoa Bay’s Connection to the 2023 Lipton Cup. NO pressure Alex and Mark!

The Lipton Challenge Cup is the only national inter-club sailing competition in South Africa.

In the long history of South Africa’s longest contionuous running sailing regatta – the Lipton Cup – only one team from Algoa Bay has ever won this prestigious regatta. That winner was Harold Kohler sailing a 30 Square Meter yacht under the banner of the Redhouse Yacht Club in Cape Town during 1957 on his yacht named Trickson II.

That win led to the only hosting of the Lipton Cup in Algoa Bay during 1958.

The 2023 running of the Lipton Cup does not have a local yacht taking part BUT the link to Algoa Bay is via the challenger for the Lipton Cup in a yacht named PhatAss skippered by Alex Schon and being sailed under the Seal Point Yacht Club burgee.

Alex and crew are sailing a Far East 28R which is marketed by local Gqeberha based outfit – Performance Yachting.

Mark Dawson from Performance Yachting said; “A win for the Fareast could reinvigorate sailors to look again at new and affordable boats. If we can get a class of Fareast 28R and/or Fareast 19R then close one design sailing could return to South African clubs and generate pathways to national and international competition.”

The Far East 28 is a sportboat with assymetric spinnaker and has been holding it’s own against the other challengers.

phatAss is owned by Deon Viljoen who purchased the Fareast 28R with a view to owning an affordable but competitive trailer sailer and has so far had the boat on the road for Mykonos, MSC and now at Lipton, all from his base at Deneysville Aquatic Club where he has been racing and rigging the boat with the assistance of Manten Marina. “With Alex Schon joining him on PhatAss, Deon has built a great team to challenge for the Lipton 2023,” concluded Dawson.

The Lipton Challenge Cup is being sailed out of Durban from 11 to 15 July with one race per day.

After 2 races the top three yachts are all tied on 5 points:

  1. PhatAss – FarEst 28R, Alex Schon (SPYC)
  2. Nitro – Cape 31, David Rae/Mike Hayton (RCYC)
  3. Kingsbourne Challenger – Pacer 27, Richard Weddell/Alec Lanh=gham-Love (SYC)

Should PhatAss continue and win the Lipton Cup then they will be the first Far East 28R to win this prestigious regatta and the second from a Gauteng based yacht club to win.

The PhatAss team consists of:

  • Skipper – Alex Schon
  • Team Manager – Wolf Seitz
  • Crew – Marko Seitz, Robert Edwards, Erwee Lourens, Deon Viljoen and Petro Spies.

The Lipton Cup has a rich history spanning several decades, bringing together sailors from all corners of Southern Africa to showcase their skills and passion for the sport. This event stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Sir Thomas Lipton, a true visionary who believed in the power of sailing to unite people and foster camaraderie.

Advertisers tuned in to Algoa FM

Advertisers wanting to connect with viable customers in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route are choosing Algoa FM as their preferred media choice in the broadcast footprint.

This is evident from the annual results to March 2023, as published by holding company AME Ltd on June 2.

“Algoa FM produced excellent results for the year ended 31 March 2023,” said AME Ltd. Group CEO Dave Tiltmann, in a statement on the results.

“Collectively, national and direct sales contributed to Net Radio Revenue ending 12% above budget, which together with tight financial controls, resulted in EBITDA last experienced pre-Covid.

“This performance was achieved despite a magnitude of conditions such as the severe water crisis, failing municipal infrastructure, disruptive power outages, and rising inflation, which was further exacerbated by the State of Disaster, which was only lifted during April of 2022.

“During the period under review, audiences have grown, online engagement is on an upward trajectory, and cash flow remains positive,” he wrote.

Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay, says: “The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRC), reports that our audience grew by close-on 10% in the year under review, from 397 000 to 436 000 past seven-day listeners.

“BRC data also reveals that Algoa FM is in a class of its own in the country, enjoying the highest percentage of loyal listeners compared with the five other regional, commercial radio stations which target listeners living an adult contemporary lifestyle.”

Correspondingly, Algoa FM is helping advertisers reach their target market across multiple platforms.

“We have evolved into much more than a radio station as we now connect with loyal followers on air, online, via DStv’s Channel 837, and on the ground.

“Google analytics reports that algoafm.co.za averages a million unique users while our stream @algoafm.co.za is attracting 1,6 million listening hours per quarter. We’ve also yielded encouraging growth in the Podcast space with Journey to Justice having garnered more than 71 thousand listens since launch.

“Algoa FM is also the most visible and interactive media house in the Eastern Cape, through activations with clients almost every weekend and often during the week,” says Jay.

The trend is growing as different advertisers continue to experience a positive return on investment across the station’s various platforms.

“Encouraging for us, are the type of bookings coming from our national advertisers via United Stations, our sales house in the national market. These clients clearly value the market we have crafted in our broadcast footprint, which extends from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and inland through the Karoo.

“Much of the success our advertisers are experiencing is due to us not selling advertising, but rather, developing affordable marketing solutions which achieve goals. My team understands the market intimately and aside from offering creative packages that really work, they’re highly skilled at crafting multi-media campaigns that deliver bang for buck,” says Jay.
