We recently supplied a new Prepaid Water Meter Keypad to a local client who returned to the Straton Prepaid Offices saying that the keypad was not working when they entered their recently purchased tokens.

Looking at their till slips it showed KRN 2 which means that he Key Change Tokens had been issued to upgrade the meter.

The client said that they had entered the Key Change Tokens and then purchased the new Black Prepaid Water Meter UIU from Straton Prepaid.

Now the water meter would not accept the new tokens.

So, I got in my car and went to the site to see for myself.

The UIU communicated and displayed the correct amount of available water as well as the correct meter number so communication between the two was good.

First step was to reset the UIU – #981# and then re-pair – #999#Serial_Number###

That didn’t work so the next step was to check that the Key Change Token numbers had been entered successfully. The only way to do so is to re-enter the issued Key Change Token numbers, which I proceeded to do.

After the first set of numbers the feedback on the UIU displayed was ‘GOOD’ with a tick. When the client said that they never saw that when they entered the numbers I knew I was on the right path.

After entering the second Key Change Token number the UIU displayed a tick.

NOTE: Not all meters will give the exact same feedback so look out for a tick, beep, series of short beeps, thumbs up, OK etc after entering each set of numbers.

After that the new prepaid water meter token numbers were entered without a problem.

Hundreds of security guards sent home without wages after Eastern Cape health department fails to pay contractors

Security guards at Livingstone Tertiary Hospital in Gqeberha and other hospitals and clinics in the Eastern Cape have not been paid after the Department of Health failed to pay contractors.

Security companies contracted to the Eastern Cape Department of Health could not pay guards this month.

The cash-strapped department has been in trouble with security contractors stationed at clinics and hospitals in the Eastern Cape since January.

Earlier this year GroundUp reported that Xhobani Security Services could not pay salaries. The department owes Xhobani about R3-million. Last week, managers at Silver Solutions informed hundreds of security guards that their salaries would be paid late this month. The guards are stationed at clinics and hospitals in Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, Queenstown and in the King Williams town area.

GroundUp visited Korsten Primary Healthcare Clinic premises, which also houses the Livingstone Tertiary Hospital in Gqeberha.

Security guard Elbridge Swarts is a father of four and is worried about what will happen to his family over the long Easter weekend. “My family is angry, and so am I… Why must I be nice? I must pay R1,200 rent per month, transport for this month, and one of my sons is staying in a hostel that needs to be paid too,” he said.

“If I had been informed in time, I would have made arrangements … It’s Easter weekend and it’s going to be a bleak one.”

Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo told GroundUp that payments to service providers, including the security companies, would start next month.

The Private Sector Workers Trade Union (PSWTU) spokesperson Malibongwe Kayiyana said the union would lodge a dispute with the department at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

He said the PSWTU would fight to have the guards paid before mid-April. “There are about 1,000 guards at Eastern Cape government institutions that have not been paid. We are taking the department to the CCMA,” he said.

Crowd storms police station after Komani protest leaders arrested

There was a standoff between police and members of Komani Progress Action outside the police station after their leaders were arrested.

Three leaders of Komani Progress Action were arrested before they could forge ahead with a planned shutdown of the Eastern Cape town.

As residents were gathering to protest about poor services on Friday morning, their leaders – Mncedisi Mbengo, Axolile Masiza, and Solomzi Nkwentsha – left the crowd to speak to police.

They then went inside the police station where they were apparently promptly arrested.

As this news spread, the crowd stormed the station. They shoved officers and swore at them and demanded access to the holding cells.

Police then used pepper spray to drive the crowd out of the station.

It is unclear whether the leaders were arrested for contempt of a previous court order against them, or an interdict the municipality had won, or if it was for an “illegal gathering”.

Questions sent to Komani police spokesperson Namhla Mdleleni for clarification have gone unanswered.

Resident Noxolo Malantyu said when they arrived for the protest, police were already waiting for them. “Every corner had police officers, but we were not shaken,” said Malantyu.

While some loitered, many protesters dispersed after a few hours. Police kept monitoring the situation. Most shops had shut their doors but then opened for business around lunch time.

The protesters had planned to march to the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality office to deliver a memorandum for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister Thembi Nkadimeng, demanding she dissolve the council.

The second stop was to be the Department of Labour to protest over alleged victimisation of workers at security and cleaning companies.

In a media statement on Wednesday, the COGTA parliamentary committee gave a scathing report on the state of the municipality based on briefings by the Auditor General (AG) and National Treasury. “Repeat audit findings indicate that the municipality does not take the AG’s findings and recommendations seriously,” the statement said.

The municipality has been operating under provincial and national government interventions for two years after a previous provincial government intervention was unsuccessful, the statement said.

Dafabet Warriors confident after three wins

The Dafabet Warriors team are confident ahead of their final two games in the One Day Cup series.

They play Gbets Rocks in Paarl on Wednesday, October 18, and are back home at the Dafabet St George’s Park Cricket Stadium for their final One Day Cup match against North West University Dragons on Sunday, October 22.

The Dafabet Warriors’ season started disappointingly, with matches against Western Province and Hollywoodbets Dolphins washed out.

Three emphatic wins have followed – by four wickets against DP World Lions on October 6 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg; 109 runs against Momentum Multiply Titans at Dafabet St George’s Park on October 8, and eight wickets against AET Tuskers at Dafabet St George’s Park on October 15.

“The mood in the camp is really good at the moment. We are very confident after the three wins, but the messaging from myself and the coaching staff is just to stay grounded and not look too far ahead,” says captain Matthew Breetzke.

“The squad is in a good place,” adds coach Robbie Peterson.

He says the team is ready for the different conditions expected at Boland Park in Paarl.

“We have a lot of options. We will see what the conditions are like when we get to Paarl and decide on the best way forward to get points out of the Rocks game”.

The points standing at present is Western Province top of the log on 20 points having played five matches with four wins under the belt.

Dafabet Warriors are second on the log with 18 points, also having played five matches with two abandoned and three wins.

Breetzke says the team is hungry for more victories. “We have two big games against very strong teams coming up on Wednesday and Sunday.

“The squad is taking it game by game and focusing on getting better with every game. That hunger is what is keeping the team strong,” he says.

After the One Day Cup, the cricketing action becomes international at Dafabet St George’s Stadium, with the Proteas playing India in a T20 International on Tuesday, December 12, and again in a One Day International on Tuesday, December 19.

“With all the rain the grounds are looking superb. We look forward to an action-packed cricket offering this holiday period with entertainment for the whole family” says Leigh Deyzel Project Lead.
