North American Indian Bibliography: Northwest Coast. This collection contains of nine of the 350 tales collected by photographer Edward S. Curtis (1868--1952). These tales represent sacred origin stories, ghost stories, trickster tales, and non-sacred campfire tales. The book is organized by geographic area---Plains, Northwest Coast, and California---each with a short introduction. The book is illustrated with Curtis' photographs. Curtis has received criticism for "staging" his subjects, creating culturally inaccurate portraits. Bierhorst has edited these tales into simple, easy prose. e/s/legend/Plains/Northwest Coast/California.
